With the addition of Novar Gardens Petanque Club in South Australia the number of PFA- affiliated cubs is now 51 with nearly 1650 licenced players across the country.
Here is the Novar Gardens story - could it happen in your part of the country?
Novar Gardens Petanque Club SA - SUPERNOVARS
Petanque - We had never heard of it, definitely had no idea how to spell it, had no idea how to play it but we did have a good friend who was very persistent that we should at least try it. We finally relented to his insistence & a little over 18 months ago visited Club de Petanque D’Adelaide for our introduction to the game.
The atmosphere was warm & friendly & old hands of the game were only too happy to provide advice & encouragement. We enjoyed it immensely & found quite a few similarities to the game of bowls.
So after a total of 2 afternoons at Club de Petanque D’Adelaide and after possibly 1 drink too many Toivo Kangur informed some members of the Novar Gardens Bowling Club that within a couple of years it would be known as the Novar Gardens Bowling & Petanque Club. The members were left scratching their heads asking ‘what on earth is Petanque?
With the support of our small local bowling club & also the local council we acquired some parkland adjacent to the bowling club. With the help of volunteers & friends who had the necessary equipment we put down an 8 rink piste, constructed a garden, laid some pavers & developed the surrounds. Expected final completion date for this initial piste area is late July this year.
Also in the pipeline will be the erection of lights suitable for night Petanque & further development of the adjacent parkland to increase our number of pistes.
In April 2016 we held our 1st ‘Come & Try Petanque Day’ on our newly laid piste, and were greatly encouraged with a turnout of over 80 people. Only 16 of these had actually played the game before & over 50 had never heard of the game but came along out of curiosity.
Since that day a little over a year ago we have been running Petanque at Novar Gardens fortnightly with attendances of between 30 & 50 players each time. Most of these people are new to the game.
In recent months we have registered with the South Australian Petanque League (SAPL), selected club colours & nickname via democratic open voting process, formed a Petanque club committee, created a financial membership option (including player licences). To date we have 45 financial members with more to join shortly. Over & above our paid up members we have another 30 or so who attend on a regular basis.
The club’s own signature event is ‘Petanque in the Park’ which is played on natural open parkland terrain which is especially prepared for the day. This is held twice a year catering for both social & serious Petanque players.
This past month we have put in our application to become part of the PFA & submitted our player licence applications. This coming SAPL season we look forward to competing in SAPL Interclub events & encouraging our players at Novar Gardens to venture outside our own club & play at other SAPL Clubs & events.
Our club has a strong emphasis on engaging with our local community & believes that a good social atmosphere will enable more of the community to be introduced to the game Petanque.
We would like to express our thanks to Club de Petanque D’Adelaide for our introduction to the game which has led to the establishment of our own club at Novar Gardens. In particular Tina Stockley & Adrian Clements who have given of their time selflessly with advice on structure, understanding the game & coaching. Also thanks to the executive of the SAPL for their encouragement & support.
Importantly, without the support & assistance of the Novar Gardens Bowling Club & The City of West Torrens Council this project would not have eventuated. A very special mention to Councillor George Demetriou & also Mayor John Trainor in this regard.
The biggest thanks must go to the most wonderful bunch of people who come out on a very regular basis to play, attend working bee’s, volunteer for all kinds of duties & attend our Petanque social functions. Without these fine people we would not have a club.
